Here’s Why Women’s Shirts Button on the Left While Men’s Are on the Right

Since most maids were right-handed, it was easier for them to fasten buttons that were placed on the left side of the wearer’s garment. This design choice made dressing their mistresses quicker and smoother.

Men, on the other hand, have always buttoned their own shirts. Since most men are right-handed, it made more sense for their buttons to be on the right side, allowing easier access and a more natural motion when getting dressed.

There’s also a touch of symbolism in it: men’s clothing often mirrored practicality and readiness — think soldiers drawing weapons from their right side — while women’s fashion represented refinement and assistance.
